Heartbreak Kid DVD

1972′s The Heartbreak Kid starred Charles Grodin and was directed by Elaine May. It’s a comic classic about a lovable loser who marries the wrong girl, then finds the right one while on his honeymoon. S,ounds great but I never saw it—definitely time for an update, and who better to take over than Ben Stiller and The Farrelly Brothers? Reteamed for the first time since There’s Something About Mary, this tittering trio delivers not only the laughs but the drama and romance as well.

Forty-year-old confirmed bachelor Eddie (Stiller) changes his mind about marriage shortly after attending the nuptials of his former live-in girlfriend. He meets a beautiful, sexy and seemingly sweet blonde, Lila (Malin Akerman). Egged on by his very-married best friend (Rob Corddry) and his libidinous father (Jerry Stiller), Eddie takes the plunge…but it is too soon.

On his honeymoon, he learns more about the dark side of his bride than he ever wanted to know, and he meets his soul mate, Miranda (Michelle Monaghan). A series of lies, unleashed secrets and misunderstandings set the movie up for a crazy climax.

The Heartbreak Kid gets a bit sloppy towards the end, as less becomes more (and then too much), but that’s okay. While there are plenty of raunchy jokes, Bobby and Peter Farrelly are more mature, and when it comes to characters worth caring about, The Heartbreak Kid is worth adding to the library.

The DVD includes several deleted scenes–one of which definitely should have been left in the narrative (it’s the one showcasing father, son, and cellphone). There’s also a really funny featurette about how they celebrated Halloween on the set, and a couple of other things such as a making-of doc, a gag reel, and a commentary by the Brothers.
